Electric convection vs. electric hydronic baseboard heaters

Both types are self-contained, plug-in or hardwired units — neither needs a home boiler or hot-water loop. The difference is how they store and release heat.

Larger rooms on hydronic heat often need two or more units wired to the same thermostat, since self-contained hydronic units cap out lower per unit than electric convection strips.

Electric hydronic baseboard heaters warm a sealed reservoir of oil or water inside the unit, which then radiates gentle, steady heat and keeps warming the room for a while after it switches off — better suited to bedrooms and rooms that are occupied for long stretches. Self-contained hydronic units typically top out around 1,250 watts each, so larger rooms may need more than one.

Do I need a 120V or 240V baseboard heater?

Standard 120V baseboard heaters plug into or wire to a regular household circuit and comfortably handle up to about 1,500 watts. Larger rooms that need more heat are usually better served by a 240V hardwired unit, which runs more efficiently at higher wattages and typically needs its own dedicated circuit and thermostat installed by an electrician.

Can a baseboard heater be my only source of heat for a room?

Yes, for a single room in most climates — baseboard heaters are a common primary heat source for additions, sunrooms, basements, and converted spaces that aren’t on the main ductwork. In very cold climates or poorly insulated rooms, you may need a higher-wattage 240V unit or more than one heater to keep up on the coldest days.

Do baseboard heaters need a separate thermostat?

Yes. Baseboard heaters need a compatible wall thermostat to control temperature, and it’s sold separately from the heater itself. Line-voltage single-pole or double-pole thermostats are the standard choice; smart thermostats built for low-voltage central HVAC systems are not compatible with a hardwired baseboard circuit without a specific line-voltage smart thermostat model.
